Perhaps it was his way of alerting you to his presence so you weren't startled . I like to hear a good whistler...

Same here Tabby, its a cheerful sound, and better than them moaning!
I used to be able to do those fingers-in-the-mouth, ear splitting whistles over the fields to call my dogs or attract someone's attention I wanted, I could whistle far louder than I could shout for them.
It don't come out quite the same these days though!
