Many, many decades ago NSW pubs were either
early or
late openers. They opened from 6am to 6pm or 10am to 10pm however the late openers could extend their hours to midnight by serving food so the pub would offer plates of sandwiches for a pittance.
I don't think anybody ate these sandwiches as they were stale and dry with curled edges (reminded me of British Rail food). When the pub did close I suspect they were collected for resale the next day.
Perhaps your pubs could do the same thing 50 years later!
