He wrote it after an argument with Cathy Etchingham, his girlfriend. Her middle name is Mary, hence the title of the song. The jacks and the clowns are a reference to the closing screen they used to have on BBC 2.

Yes, I've been googling it! Lots of different interpretations but I read about the argument with his girlfriend. So many interpretations too!

Afraid I've been collecting Hendrix since since the late sixties so I know lots of useless information. Never mind the interpretations.

No still can't get yours and I don't want to look it up if I can avoid it. That's not playing right.

Yes I was into Hendrix way back then, much to my father's distaste. I used to love Purple Haze.

A clue is the group were popular in the middle 60s, specifically '65. I can give you the first letter, but that would definitely give it away.
