Steam cars

Didn't know whether to put this in Leisure or Travel, but here we are. A friend recently posted a link to The Steam Car Club of Great Britain and I enjoyed taking a look.

Here's their "For Sale" page.

Has anyone owned or ridden in a steam car?

Re: Steam cars

Here's a 1903 Stanley Steamer Model C Runabout. I could imagine going for a picnic in this one!

Re: Steam cars

The description says "In good order with current boiler and hydraulic certificates. Excellent road performance. We have done some work since in our ownership: replacing tyres, pump valves, and have fitted new safety valve to the boiler etc. Otherwise the car remains essentially as previous.
We are looking for £35,000 cash, but would be happy to trade-in against a larger steam car or traction engine, etc."

Re: Steam cars

I have never ridden in one but I have sat in a couple at a steam rally.
They do look romantic but they are dirty vehicles judging by the looks of one of the owners of those steam cars, he had dark dirty rings round his eyes and his hand were as black as the ace of spades. lol

Re: Steam cars

Never sat in a steam car but the big adventure for us on the steam trains were the Hop pickers 'specials' for the working holiday in the sun.
The smell was something grand.

Re: Steam cars

I could just imagine the uproar that would ensue if one was to drive along the city streets in such a vehicle today I have seen them at steam shows and rallies but have never ridden in one.

Re: Steam cars

All the big car makers are focusing on hybrids - gas/electric and maybe solar. I don't suppose steam will ever be an option again but these have quite a lot of charm!
