Once i was a young man and all i thought i had to do was smile.

Bet some been suckered by that one , trouble is, some folks are willing suckers when egos trade off.

I hate the let it go song but, sometimes you just have to.

Smiling salesmen heading towards you, should be a warning to run for your life!
They won’t let you out of their clutches until you’ve signed on the dotted line.
Then when things go wrong after your purchase, their smile has usually disappeared!

With those people I just go into a kind of auto pilot and think of something else. I just smile back and keep repeating the word "no" - like a mantra- until they give up. If they persist I just say.. "No is such a small and simple word. What part of it don't you understand?" That usually works.

I was going to mention salesmen, estate agents and councillors/politicians

Anyone else might just be genuine.
