Does Anyone Know How To Keep Varmints Out

I have a lot of fruit trees, but I have a real problem with racoons and possums stealing the fruit.
Does anyone know of a way to stop that?

Good for stray cats too

Put a collar or barbed/razor wire round the trunk if they are tall enough. (Usually fruit trees are not)

Put up a prominent poster emblazoned

KEEP OUT varmints.

Near me the Varmints are youths who climb your 6 foot fence and try and break into your sheds or house. I have thought of a shotgun but its illegal here in the UK unless you have a licence. Any furry things are welcome in my garden and have access to my one apple tree if they want.

We used to love to watch the skunks, raccoons, possums, chipmunks and woodchucks when we visited the US. The raccoons would get through the cat flap, once they raided the kitchen when we'd been grocery shopping & we caught one dragging a loaf of bread through the flap! You're so lucky to have them! Do you use all your fruit? Can't you share it with them, they have to fend for themselves and eat what they can get.
