Weight training and the over 50s

Anyone else on here that does a bit of lifting with the weights?

I use other forums but wanted to hear it from an age specific forum. I am interested to hear how others of a similar age to me (53) cope with the longer recovery times etc.

A good work-out session can take me 5 days to recover from in respect of muscle soreness due to the micro-tears (not injury).

Interested in what you are experiencing with this, and your age etc.

Re: Weight training and the over 50s

I don't pick weights up Action Man but being in my 60's I find carrying shopping the mile back from Tescos is enough for me. After a cup of
tea I am back to normal although I don't like carry things too heavy as my arms are going now. Where they are going I don't know but what I mean is the strength disappears out of them the older you get.

I regularly lift a glass with something alcoholic in it - should I be exerting myself to that extent at the age of eighty ?

It takes me all day to recover from doing the shopping..
Putting bags in and out of the car is exhausting ...

Re: Weight training and the over 50s

I don't do weight lifting, though I do certain exercises like chair dips and sit ups, but I run pretty hard at times. I managed 2x a day training a few days last week consisting of some hard sprints and then a recovery run. I find my body still recovers fine (57) and I can still handle pretty tough sessions but my biggest hurdle is a lack of motivation. I have the 'been there and got the t-shirt' syndrome and it is hard to shake off. Pretty sure at some time or other - maybe soon - I will rap it all in and take up some other hobby like photography or art and merely become a spectator instead, only doing the minimum to keep reasonably fit.

Re: Weight training and the over 50s

I gave up weight training in my early 60s for no other reason than after 40 or so years I got bored. My exercise these days consists of cycling, jogging, brisk walks and a large amount of gardening.

The only weight training I do these days is lifting my coffee mug from the table beside my chair to my mouth and back again. Similarly my fork, loaded with food from plate to mouth. For me that is quite sufficient weight training.

Re: Weight training and the over 50s

I think it's brilliant that people, no matter what age, do what they can to keep fit and healthy.

I should do more myself
