What Sort Of Meals Did Your Mum Concoct

My mother used to skin some sausages, put them in the frying pan with water and bring to the boil. She'd then crumble in some Oxo cubes and continue simmering until the gravy was thick. Poured over mash, it was a very filling meal.

Couldn't eat it now with all that salt!

I think mum could cook a decent cake once upon a time but they went to the WI. As for day to day cooking what was the point? The thing* had no taste buds, lit a fag and farted.

* that male who I hated when alive and still do

My Mum didn't like cooking so we got the whole Birds Eye range . Rissoles , cod balls , fish fingers , steaklets and many more . Sunday night we got cheese on toast , that was home cooked ! Also she was really good at thick cold custard ....... ah , fond memories !

Re: What Sort Of Meals Did Your Mum Concoct

My mum's parents were Italian and we had some great meals! She would cook an old boiling fowl and some ham hock to make a rich stock and use it as a base for minestra soup, pasts, garlic, vegetables, lots of chicken, tomato puree, and when it was on our plates we would dribble some red wine on it. God, it was gorgeous, I can smell it now. We also had polenta which she would fry in olive oil with bubbly cheese on top, not exactly healthy but we all loved it. I've tried some of her meals but it's just not the same.

My mother loathed cooking which is probably why she was so bad at it - I was 18 before I found out that sprouts were not meant to be liquid !

My mother was not a bad cook, but she was very boring and unimaginative.
She boiled vegetables into a mush and never used any seasoning other than salt. It was what I called "the Glasgow school of cookery".
At least she never poisoned us.

My father didn't do much cooking, but was legendary for making chips.

We always had Roast Beef Joint on sundays.

The rest of the week, it would be Mutton Stew, Rabbit Stew, Egg & Chips.

My Mam cooked and I don't think she ever complained doing it.
It was however, very unimaginative like you grumble. We only
had salt and pepper in the meals we had. Loved her stew and
dumplings, her Yorkshires, her meat pies.
Never had pasta or rice that I can remember until I went to
a Italian restaurant about 16 and mentioned why don't we try
Spaghetti. Don't think we had it more than a few times.
I cant eat my meals without flavour nowadays and have garlic
with everything even fish. Love my garlic.
Don't think they were ever taught properly in those days and
having been born just after the war think there wasn't much to
put on the table either.

That made me laugh out loud - " at least she never poisoned us" .

My mum made plain fayre. Mince and tatties. Scotch pie, chips and beans. Roast chicken dinner. We enjoyed it.

My grandfather cooked a mean plate of chips. He knew the right potatoes to use. Drenched with salt and vinegar.

Hence the reason I now spend my latter years trying to lose weight.....,.

Mum made mostly plain foods also, but they were tasty. She knew well how to make a little go a long way.
She also made wonderful cakes, biscuits, scones, and pikelets, and desserts.
My Dad was a real good cook, and was forever making up recipes.
He'd called them muff-muff #nn (whatever the number was).

It seems the males had a way with making chips! My dad did too.
After my brother married and left home, his buddies would still come to the house and ask for them!
