My attempt at poetry

GOING CAMPING.

We thought we would go camping
When our children were still young.
To spend time in the great outdoors
And have some family fun.
We bought a lovely six berth tent
With an awning on the side.
The children piled into the car
To the country then to ride.

A pretty forest glade was found
Where no other tent had stood.
We put ours up while the children played,
This outdoor life felt good.
But being ignorant folk from town
Not knowing country lore,
Our tent was in a dried up pond
And down the rain did pour.

My husband dug a trench around
His soaking back long bent.
This quickly filled with water
Which then ran into the tent.
The children cried together
"The waters getting high"
We got them back into the car
At least they would stray dry.

The ropes and pegs we loosened
To take the whole thing down.
Water poured from the sagging top
I thought we both would drown.
After warming baths that evening
And with warming drinks to sip,
We poured over maps and travel books
To plan our second trip.

I wrote this after reminiscing with family. Absolutely true!!

It was a long time ago, too long to think about and we have a good laugh about it now. We had many camping trips after that.

We go camping every year in a tent and had similar problems to you, but this year we've bought a van and turning it into a camper

Re: My attempt at poetry

Enjoyed that AlbertaS, that's the stuff stories are made from but better told as a poem LOL. It reminds of when I was a child, my mum loved camping, no idea why, it always looked hard work. We landed at Scarborough and it came down in torrents and we were getting soaked but newcomers came onto the site and they had come over from the west and it was sunny. We packed up there and then and landed at St Annes, it was warm and sunny there so worth the move.
