It would and could never have remained a small regional issue.

Too many great empires saw the opportunity to gain from engaging in a European conflict that would what today we would call an adjustment in wealth and possessions.

Re: Patriotism!

Slightly different angle but with the intentions of enhancing Belgium Prestige.. (whatever that was)

I saw a short documentary today about Belgium establishing a free state in the Congo. End of 1800's beginning of 1900's. A topic that I had previously no knowledge of.

Horrific atrocities were committed against the Congolese people. Mutilation for failure in meeting the rubber quotas under the rules of the Red Rubber system.
In the Museum in Belgium (which has been re-opened this week) they had had a live human zoo, with slaves in the early 1900's. Severed hands were proof that forces had shot and killed someone, delivered in baskets ! The image of the father staring at his daughter's severed hand and foot for not meeting the rubber quota. The list is endless.

This makes some gruesome reading.

That was caused by fascism and nationalism, or you could
call it,( patriotism). Which Hitler used to motivate his citizens
to carry out all manner of atrocities and actions that they
wouldnt normally have been willing to do?

WW1 Was bound to happen. It was inevitable for a mess of reasons.

What was also inevitable is that a nationalistic combined with socialistic government would emerge out of the Weimar Republic as a direct result of the shameful stitch-up that was enshrined in the infamous Treaty of Versailles.

If it hadn't been Shicklgruber it would have been someone else cast in the same mould.
