I can remember reading about this a year or so ago. They thought that 28 brand-new Spitfires, still crated up, were buried at the end of a runway in Burma at the end of WW2.
As you mentioned, this sort of fizzled out, and I suppose the searchers ran out of money.

Mind you, with serviceable Spitfires now fetching over a million pounds each, it could be very profitable for somebody should they ever find them.
