Freedom of speech

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ptain-Tom.html

Laurence Fox led anger about the decision today, tweeting: 'The police should be free to do their jobs, which is investigate actual crime, not arresting idiots who tweet idiotic things.

'Freedom of speech is the cornerstone of any open society.
Protect it, even if you don’t like or agree with it.'

It comes as the SNP continues efforts to introduce a new hate crime bill that will criminalise 'stirring up hatred' - a 'vague' definition that critics believe could legalise cancel culture.
Indeed, SNP losing their grip. Bad decision.

Re: Freedom of speech

Freedom of speech is gradually disappearing but only from one side. If Lawrence Fox wants to stand for PM, I for one would vote for him.

Freedom only matters, when there is something else to add.

Re: Freedom of speech

The SNP are deciding what "hate" is.

It's a very dangerous thing because not only is the freedom of speech being eroded, what you can say and what you cannot say are being decided by politicians who define "hate" and "acceptable" and "offensive".

It will soon be an offence to say negative things about the SNP if we aren't careful, just like in North Korea and places like that.

Re: Freedom of speech

Just for my tuppenceworth.....Offence is taken, not given. If someone doesn't like what is said, then the onus is on them to deal with that. You can speak your mind without being aggressive about it (which is where the mix up happens, I think) The SNP are going way overboard with this hate crime bill, and I believe it will come back to bite 'em on the bahookey.

Re: Freedom of speech

Any speech ,that is hate driven, benefits no one, depending on your definition of “ hate speech”......can you imagine having all that hate and anger inside of you.....don’t take what people say personally, but, surely there is a line to be drawn.....just my thinking on the subject matter.

I am happy that something is being done, long overdue, being on the receiving end of hatred speech from some, not nice.

Edit to add, I also believe that there are some of us, who “ deliberately “ go out of their way to offend and spread hatred, no wonder some people can’t stand each other, dreadful.....I doubt anyone here, has been on the end of hatred directed at them, I know I certainly haven’t.

Re: Freedom of speech

Many years ago my father said that the only place a man is truly free is in his own mind.

As far as I know there are still no thought police so that still applies.

Free speech? Since the internet I think we have been censored more than ever not just by government but but the platforms we use and our peers.
Try saying anything that goes against the mob and you soon see that free speech works both way and the mob with the biggest gob always wins.
