I question the idea that a small vessel as is depicted in the motivational media blurb, can influence any international export trade we have left after previous governments encouraged the selling off of our manufacturing capacity too other nations that are now selling stuff to us ?

This is just another of Boris's "brainwaves" that he will lose interest in after a couple of weeks, (like Brexit) ?

I expect him to drop any interest in the pandemic any time soon !!

There's some interesting information about what I believe are the 'two largish aircraft carriers' you mention, on the links below, for anyone who's interested.

According to the first link below these aircraft carriers were built in this way and at the locations mentioned:

"Sections have been built in shipyards across the UK - Glasgow, Hebburn, on the Tyne, Appledore, in North Devon, Portsmouth and Birkenhead - and then ferried to Rosyth, in Scotland, to be welded together."

Thanks for that Bas, it's what l thought , it's the same with the
submarines as well, so we do have some residual expertise
available still ?
But l don't think that justifies building a a yacht with no real function
does it ?
I see they are calling it a business promoting yacht now, but are now
going to fund it via the MOD budget ( US) ?
I wonder if they have told the admirals yet ??

DM, If Boris knows that he is going to end up getting stuffed by other huge useless spending, like HS2, he will also know that the "diversion" trick, frequently used by MPs, is well worth playing.

Start by floating () the idea of a Royal Yacht/Business Yacht, then pull the funds, whenever a crisis emerges, to make the voter think you care!

You don't ever have to deliver a product!

You could be right Ted, just look at cross rail unfinished/ Brexit
unfinished/ rail electrification unfinished etc?
Trouble is we keep extending the times and the prices so the
companies involved continue sucking the taxpayers fit ?
It's supposed to be a trickle down economy not a suck up economy !!

I completely agree.

Our present 'leaders' appear to be completely incompetent even compared with some recent failures like BLiar.

In addition to the Royal White Elephant (er, Royal Yacht),we seem able to afford two (non nuclear) aircraft carriers, but not the proposed number of aircraft they were supposed to carry or the required number of escort vessels.

We are also paying for HS2, which is another expensive folly that no-one (other than millionaires) is ever going to use.

We appear to be sufficiently well-off to send foreign aid all over the world AND invite illegal immigrants into our country who we will have to support for ever, including their offspring, yet we have British people out of work and living on the streets - including ex-servicemen.

I'm afraid our wonderful government is all set to bankrupt us as a nation and, to add insult to injury, make us the laughing stock of the world.

Of course, who else is to blame? Why, us the electorate of course. We seem able only to vote for either the Conservatives or Labour.

Plus we need a fifteen or twenty year national plan that whatever party
happens to be in HAS to follow ??
This reversing every four or five years is crap !!
We need a national debate to decide the priorities and governments
MUST work around that untill it is completed !!
Politicians won't like it but as they are ones stuffing things up then
they must put up with it or get out !!
How's that for reform ??

Re: A proposed new royal yacht, I wonder where it will be built?

Hi

A typical Boris mess.

It will have to be tendered overseas as he refused to include non military shipbuilding in our WTO Agreements.

He announced it before he realised it had to be a Military Vessel so we are again a laughing stock.

It will have to be armed and have up to date electronic counter measures as it is such a high risk target.

A lot of comments about this on the military forums. Apparently the building cost, manning and running is coming out of the defence budget. Comments from serving soldiers are concentrated on the cost whilst they do not have hot running water or heating in their accommodation.
