A Bird question

A question for our Bird Man of Rotherham. (Nom).

Are there likely to be any birds here at the moment who have travelled from either the USA or South Africa?

Re: A Bird question

Certainly get visitors from the USA Fair isle is a popular birders venue during September, and the West coast of Ireland often turns up a few. Some of these are ship assisted, birds that become exhausted and land on ships rigs etc.

We interchange birds with Africa think Swallows etc, specific species from South Africa i cant say off hand.

BTW you minx im a Northern person and would not wander down South to Rotheram unless to invade.

Re: A Bird question

Your South African question intrigued me, so a quick look at the checklist of South African birds found over 100 species that have or can be seen in the UK

Whether any have come from SA is debatable, certainly there have been birds ringed in the UK recovered in SA.

Just out of interest, 2 American birds reported in the UK today, American Golden Plover, and Semipalmated sandpiper.

For all my talents , I can't do geography. I thought you were near Bedlington for some reason, and I also thought Bedlington was by Rotherham.
Having just consulted my trusty old map, I see Bedlington is loads further north than Rotherham, so you must be practically in Scotland, no wonder you talk funny.
My ex husband is in Dumfries, not that that's anything to do with the price of fish.
Anyway snooty drawers, my mistake.

Anyway, down to business. Thankyou for going to the trouble of looking up the info for me. Are any of these S.A. birds likely to frequent my humble back garden right down here, or are they elsewhere in the UK?

Many questions today, I know.
Just like to keep you on your toes.

Re: A Bird question

Regarding the South African birds, i would not expect any to frequent your garden at this time of year, could be a couple of warblers in spring summer.

I think you may have been thinking of Rothbury.
