We had a washing machine on which almost every moving part had a problem at some point. I'm a reasonably practical guy to I did the repairs myself.
A tale. The carbon brushes on the main motor wore out. No problem. I went to the service shop to buy a replacement set.
"Sorry mate but your motor is beyond repair. We can sell you an exchange if you bring the old one in."
"Why would you want the old one if it is beyond repair??"
"It's the way we do it."
I left. A division of our company was making electric motors so I got some carbon brushes from the store. Wrong size but I cut them down to fit.
Just an example of the disposable attitude our society has developed.
