September 3rd 1939

War was declared 70 years ago today, what a war it was too, after the 1st world war ended they said it was the war to end all wars but the 1939 - 1945 one proved them all wrong.

Fifty seven million died and half of them were civilians, all because of one man, Hitler the hun, Stalin wasn't much better either, between the early thirties until the war finished they recon he killed more Russians than the Germans did.

Being Polish both my Mum's and Dad's families were decemated by Nazis (Mum in Warsaw) and Soviets (Dad in Eastern Poland). For me there is no grudge just a sadness. My Mum finds it harder to forgive and forget as she was only 13 years old when her whole family were wiped out on 13th of September 1939 which is the day I - although no longer religious - light a candle in their memory.

Sorry for your family's tragedy Yola, thank goodness your parents survived, Stalin had thousands of Polish officers put to death in the Pripet marshes in eastern Poland, this was before Hitler attacked Russia, him and Hitler carved up Poland between them.

Re: September 3rd 1939

There can be very few families who would be unable to say they have not been affected by loss from either WW1 or 2.

My grandfather lost two brothers in WW1 and another in WW2, he always asked us to remember them on the days they died. A tradition that all of us try to keep.

I hope we never have to face such a thing again.
