Hi

It is an Alpha Innotec Air Source Heat Pump.

The bit that shorted out is a connection between the circuit board and the compressor.

That is all I know fender, I am no expert on these things.

Ok,

Well keep us updated. I've worked on heat pumps many times.
Don't want to see you get ripped off.
I don't think those Alpha's are that common over here.

Hi

It was originally the soft start board, supplied by Omnie. a company in Devon.

That was replaced today, then the link.

Power is now getting to the compressor, which is not working.

They are now saying that it would be cheaper to get a new complete unit.

That is going to cost several thousands.

Can you get me a copy of their work reports?
Sounds like it was probably misdiagnosed in the first instance. I'd be interested to see what tests they made to conclude the compressor is faulty. Compressors are replaceable, it should have a model number on the side.

A model number of the outdoor unit would be useful.

Re: My Heating.

Hi

No worksheets, just verbal.

This is a photo of the board that they replaced.

Too wet and dark to get out now to the unit, I will do so tomorrow.

Thanks for your help.

Re: My Heating.

Hi Swims,

That looks like an inverter board - not a soft start. These systems normally use variable speed rotary compressors.

To check compressor.
Remove the compressor wiring connections and meter out the three terminals between each other. They are normally marked something like UVW. So, you would meter u-v, u-w and v-w. The resistance should be the same between each winding. The resistance could be checked against the compressor manufacturers data, but is often quite low at 1-2 ohms. If ok, the windings are good. However, that does not mean the comp may not be seized. However, if that was the case they should have realised that on startup,as it would have made a noise and locked out. They should check the windings to earth as well.

Not so easy to check the inverter board, as it varies the frequency according to load.
Best way is to use an inverter checker like as in the link. Any decent a/c company would have an inverter checker.

http://www.edcpumps.com/en/inverter-phase-check.php

You can't just use any old inverter checker, as these compressors are dc three phase and not ac.

It could also be simpler things like no power getting to the inverter due to a faulty relay / loose or burnt wiring.
They need to check if power is actually getting to the inverter.

Re: My Heating.

Hi

Thanks again fender.

I am completely out of my comfort zone on these things.

I am far happier with science than engineering.

Re: My Heating.

No worries.
Just that I'm not convinced (at this time) that the compressor is duff.
This could be a far simpler repair - but as always it depends if the engineers actually know what they are doing. Misdiagnosis on these systems is all too common, people guessing rather than diagnosing.

However, it has been known for a faulty inverter to bugger the compressor and vice versa.
