Re: Debunking the Irish Border Issue ?

Switzerland is not just in the single market but is also in schengen so a bit irrelevant to the discussion.

It's completely relevant because it is not in the EU or customs union. It has bilateral agreements instead of membership - and the borders are open so trade moves freely.

Re: Debunking the Irish Border Issue ?

Switzerland may as well be an eu member as they end up implementing all EU regs. We are not going for a swiss model. It's not comparable to northern Ireland.

They don't want to be an EU member - that's the whole point.

Switzerland - no customs union
Switzerland - no border checks

Ireland - leaving the customs union
Ireland - needs a hard border.

^^^ easy really.

And Switzerland doesn't implement all EU regs - its got its own currency, its own sovereignty and its own army.

Hi

I would have been happy with the Swiss Model. but we ruled it out.

I would also be happy with a standard WTO Free Trade Agreement, but we turned that down as well.

I think May is playing games, her deal or no deal and is running the clock down.

I'm not with you here ... ?

Are you saying that trade is difficult because they are like all the other 3rd countries in the world that trade with the EU ?

Switzerland has to follow EU regs as part of the single market plus they have schengen so they may as well be EU. I would have no problem with a Switzerland or Norway solution ex schengen.

Being in the EU does not suit the Swiss one bit. They are still recovering from when they pegged the CHF to the Euro and then had to abandon it quickly when everything started going legs up in 2008.

The Swiss are hugely cosmopolitan but super proud of being Swiss and having their own Sovereignty. The last thing they want is to be a member of the EU, especially after the way the EU has treated them... telling them to accept further political integration with the EU or the EU will start tearing up their bilateral agreements .... ouch !

Nast piece of work the EU they want Switzerlands money and to dump Merkels migrants on them and the Swiss are having none of it.
