Yes, it's definitely a Brit trait.When I started conversing with a Brit friend, he threw that in every sentence, and I didn't connect the dots at first. In the US we tend to say excuse me, but only if we are the cause of the interruption, bump, or whatever. In England, it sounds as if you are apologizing for making any move at all. Over the top politeness, TBH.
I say be polite, but curtail half of the "sorries".

Yes it's a british trait another trait is if your car is the only one in a carpark you can guarantee the very next car in will park next to you

I know what you mean, Ted, I'm just the same.
I remember a nice chap I used to see, telling me me once to stop apologising to everyone, he said I did it all the time, even when thing's weren't my fault.
