The Last Survivor

The last remaining POW who survived the `Great Escape` from German prison camp Stalag Luft II in 1944 after the murder of 50 of his fellow prisoners has died aged 99.

Of the 76 who escaped, 73 were recaptured, two thirds of them were executed on the direct orders of Hitler. Their bodies were re-interred in the British Army cemetery in France.

That is sad, but a good age.

Re: The Last Survivor

So few of these grand old men left now.
We owe them so much.

Down South a war veteran of about the same age, who died with no relatives around him, and only two people expected to attend his funeral, left behind a priceless photo album which he'd treasured.
Turned out it was full of war photos, he'd been a Lancaster bomber, also pics of Montgomery and Mountbatten etc.
The director of the funeral firm went online and on local radio asking if anyone would like to honour this chap.
Oh my! There were almost 400 turned up, some local folk, and others who'd had travelled hundreds of miles to be there.
Plenty of smart uniformed RAF to escort him, and so on.

Sometimes in this crazy miserable world with so much constant negativity something like this makes you realise how many good kind and honourable people there are.

Re: The Last Survivor

The tragedy is that half of this country's voting population don't give a crap about these people and what they sacrificed to keep us free from foreign domination and to preserve our basic rights and freedoms. Brainwashing and propaganda have much to answer for.

I get a lump in my throat and tears in my eye anytime there is mention of any military person who has done a brave thing, a humble moment, been courageous in any capacity, at any time in our history, in any country . Human decency to protect others before yourself.

Humbling? You bet, and I hope never to lose that weakness nor be embarrassed for anyone to see it.

RIP Mr. Dick Churchill.
