Buying a new bra

Is it just me
...why is it so difficult
Ok first you need a degree in phsics to work out the actual size required,
Using a soft tape-measure1, firstly measure around your chest under your bust, at the level where the lowest part of your bra should sit. Try not to let the tape slip down at the back; it needs to be level all the way along. Take this measurement (in inches): if it is even, add four, if it is odd, add five. The resulting number is your band size.

Next, measure around the fullest part of your bust; This measurement in inches is your bust size.

To obtain your cup size, subtract your band size from your bust size. If the two are the same, you are an A cup. If your bust size is one inch larger than your band size, you are a B cup, two inches larger and you are a C cup. This continues through the alphabet, though not in a strictly linear fashion, due to the presence of cup sizes such as DD
.
armed with what you think is the correct size you venture into the shops to be met by a harridan clutching a tape measure who looks at your current underwear with distaste and has a different opinion altogether on what your size should be.

You leave the shop cluching a new garment which when worn feels like something they used during the Spanish inquisition and can only be worn for a few hours before being disgard in disgust.

Re: Buying a new bra

I recently went for a re-fit as ive lost a fair bit of weight. I went into M&S and had an appointment with the bra fitter. She was lovely and we had a little chat and she did a guess and then measured me and she was spot on! I'd already picked the ones I liked and she'd told me to pick one of each I liked any size and she'd go get the right one once she's measured me. I picked the two I wanted and Andy who was sitting outside the changing area looking like a naughty boy payed for them lol All sorted in under half an hour and we left smiling and went for lunch!! Done deal no hassle

Re: Buying a new bra

OK Meg, I totally agree with you. I have just tried this, using that method. It is ridiculous cos my band size (adding the 4" on) is actually 3" bigger than my bust size so how can I deduct it for goodness sake? I have read this before and came to the same conclusion. Good job I am so skinny and don't have to wear one unless I go out. That is a schoolgirl's one anyway.
I think I will go to M&S just to wind them up!

Edit: Ah... I see, maybe they'd call me a minus, minus A?

Re: Buying a new bra

Up until the age of 50 I honestly didn't need to wear a bra. I did anyway but, depending on the make, I'm anything between a 34C or a 36B.

There used to be a specialist shop in my town that only sold bras and corsets, back in the 50s. This was long before I ever needed one when I was just a kid, but I believe they measured you to suit.

My mum was a bit hefty up top, and she went there to be measured and she was a 44C but, when she went to a shop to buy a 44C bra, it was too small for her.

Methinks it's hit and miss.

Re: Buying a new bra

I went to be measured for a new bra a few years ago, i am also very hefty up top, i found it very embarassing but thought it would be worth it to have the right sized bra. Good grief i bought the size as told by the assistant, and had to take it back as it was too small.
So they do not always work, depends on the shop you go into i surpose

Re: Buying a new bra

I thought this as I bought a bra from M&S nearly cuts me in half but have just thought this instant, do you remember those Boob Tubes, made out of elastic, that would be great, I could get a long one and it would take in my muffin top as well, sorted.

Re: Buying a new bra

I am also "top heavy", I used to delight in going into Myers, a "better" department store looking at the bras, only to be greeted by a size 4 teeny bopper and in response to her query of whether I needed assistance I would reply "Can you direct me to the Giant Economy Sizes, please"?
Gotta laugh, I have lost a lot of weight this year and found this beaut little lingerie shop and staffed by mature aged women, the lady who assisted me was fantastic! I have 2 bras that fit well comfy and will go back!

Re: Buying a new bra

Can you have a ' For females only ' thread? Is that not against the equalities act?
