• Free cod liver oil capsules – taken daily

• Free malt extract – taken daily

• Getting soaked walking to school, having to sit in wet clothes until they dried

• Trams rather than buses

• When families sat round the dining room table and ate together

• We knew what day it was by the meal that was served

• Receiving an apple, orange, crayons and other small items for presents at Christmas

• Coal fires with a coal scuttle for the spare coal – no central heating in those days

• Baker’s, butcher’s, greengrocer’s shops in every town, no supermarkets

• Refrigerators – they were luxuries in those days, no freezers

• Shops closing half a day every week, often on Thursdays and didn’t open Sundays

• Returning empty cordial bottles to get the refund on them

• The horse and cart used by milkmen in those days

• The Rag & Bone man in horse and cart

• A man on a bicycle selling winkles and other seafoods

• Fish & Chips were the only takeaways

• The first burger places – Wimpy bars

• Cross country running as part of regular PE lessons
We had no freebies in my home island, including healthcare.

We had buses but no trams.

We sat down together at the meal table on Sunday lunchtime

We had a stocking with an orange in it and a few small items, there was one main present for us each to open later in the day.

I don't think we had a fridge until the late 50s

We got 6p when we refund the cordial bottles

Shops didn't open on Sundays

Our milkman had a van, but until the 60s the milk was pour out of large mental jug into the container the householder had provided for it. In the 60s in came tetra packs containing the milk.

We didn't have anyone coming round selling seafood.

My mother would buy our fish and chips and drive us down to the harbour so we could watch the boats coming in.

I remember there being a Wimpy Bar in the town where we young people would congregate, we thought it was very with it.

I remember some of the things well , others we didn't have out in the countryside some I would rather forget.

Re: Own up now, who remembers …

Lived opposite the farm so each morning the 2 pints of milk left were still warm , loved the cream on the top.

Frosty mornings the milk rose up solid from the bottle the lid with it .

Walking past headmasters office hearing the whack whack of the cane ( nasty man)

Bringing the clothes in off the line stiff with ice on winters days.
