When the war began in September 1939 everyone was issued with a gas mask. It was expected that a gas attack was very likely if not inevitable. I remember that I had to take mine with me to school. It was contained in a box made of a strong cardboard. No gas attack ever occurred. (It is believed by some that this was because Hitler himself had suffered from gas attacks during World War One.)
I am not sure when we stopped carrying them around with ours. My best guess is the summer of 1940. I also wonder what became of them all.
Was yours one of them mickey mouse ones Mr M?
And regarding where they went, they went into a huge
rubber dump, not far from our house and it all got destroyed
in a huge fire started by the sun shining through its glass
eyes!
