Re: Rent a friend.

I’ve heard of escort agencies but not heard of “rent a friend” before.
I suppose it’s the modern version of it, the main difference being that the escort was nearly always someone of the opposite sex in the old days because it was “socially expected” to attend social occasions as a couple, whereas the modern day “rent a friend” can be used by either sex for a variety of platonic reasons.

I had to look up the phrase to understand what it was about and found this article interviewing someone who works as a “rent a friend” - she seems to have a variety of clients who hire her services for all sorts of reasons.

https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/re...b799c241670b62

I can’t imagine using such a service for myself but I can see why someone may choose to if they felt more comfortable attending an event with a companion and they didn’t have any friend, family, acquaintance or neighbour to invite.

My main worry would be whether the stranger I hired turned out to be dodgy. I don’t know what checks and vetting these companies do but it would be so easy for a “hired friend” to insinuate themselves into the affections of a lonely, vulnerable person and rip them off.
Equally, I wouldn’t fancy working as a “friend” - some of the experiences the “friend” in that article talked about would freak me out - especially the client who offered her $50 if she would give him her worn knickers to add to his collection! aaarrrggghhh!

Exactly what I asked a few pages back, Boot.
I asked what checks these people have, e.g. CRB checks and so on.
How would anyone know they were genuine, and as you say, it could be so easy for lonely, or vulnerable people to get sucked in.

Just looked at the T&Cs on the rent a friend website - the conditions of eligibility are that you should not have a criminal record or be on a sex offenders register but they don’t check all members details, though they reserve the right to.

“You are solely responsible for your own conduct in using the Service and interacting with other Members. You acknowledge and agree that RentAFriend does not verify its Members’ statements or conduct background checks, credit checks, or other inquiries into its Members’ backgrounds. We cannot verify the veracity of any statements made by our Members. Notwithstanding the foregoing, RentAFriend reserves the right, but is not obligated, to conduct any background check, sex offender check, or other search or screening, using available public records, in its sole discretion.”

It seems no safer than meeting a stranger from Tinder or an online dating / friendship site, really.

But maybe the difference is, you don't pay people on Tinder - do you? I don't really know how Tinder works.

When those rules talk about 'Members', are they referring to the paying customer only? Are the 'escorts' themselves classed as 'members' or employees' I wonder?

Agree.

I don't think that is something you could rent or buy.
It isn’t.

That would scare me,plus it's not my style.
You’d rather rent a friend than have a real one?
Real friends scare you so rented ones are more your style?

That's another thought, Queenie.

I was thinking mostly about unsuspecting women going off with a total stranger who may not be all he seems!

But what about the other way round?
What about an ordinary, decent chap having to go to the house of a rampant, mad old dear who fully intended locking him in for the night!

(Didn't mean you Queenie) x

The terminology they use is “Friend” and “Seeker” (the Seeker is looking for the Friend to hire) but they are both classed as “Members”, so the T&Cs apply to both.

The “contract” seems to be between the Seeker and the Friend, with the site acting as an introduction agent only.
Not sure how the company website makes their money because the money transaction seems to be directly between the Seeker and Friend.
Maybe there’s some kind of subscription fee to register as a Friend? - I haven’t looked into any further.

Here’s a link to the T&Cs

https://rentafriend.com/updated/

I only looked it up out of curiosity.
