Squashes

One of hubbies xmas presents was a packet of squash seeds
I've never grown them before, so if anyone has, I'd like some tips and help through the growing season and when to harvest etc.,

Re: Squashes

I grew butternut squash for two consecutive years. The first year I had three reasonably sized fruit from two plants and the second year I had no fruit at all from two plants -I then gave it up as a bad job ! I grew them like I would courgettes which are the same family but it usually tells you on the packet how to grow them.

Re: Squashes

Thanks Alan for answering. I do read the packets, so I know just what to do with them.
My point was, if anyone else was growing them, it would be nice to compare and throw useful tips my way.
So what did you do wrong on the second year?

Re: Squashes

I suspect it was down to a cold summer, maybe they need a warmer climate than our's.

Re: Squashes

We tried to grow some squash here this year, they set off well and we even got some small fruits but then they sort of went soggy and died. Obviously we were not doing things right.

Re: Squashes

I know the ones you mean Meg
Mine are Thompson & Morgan, Winter Festival with green marbled outer skin.
Got four months to wait before planting the seed.
Roll on spring - have I said that before?
