Re: Runner Beans, (removing the tops )

When I grew my own veg I used to nip the tops off after 5 shoots, the same as with Tomatoes.
The goodness all goes to the shoots that way and is not wasted climbing to the top of the plant.
The further water has to climb the less the plants growth fills out.

Excellent point, AB ... seems obvious now that you mention it.

Re: Runner Beans, (removing the tops )

I saw in this month's gardeners world magazine someone who trained the beans up a fence then across a structure like a pergola (the beans have to be tied in as they want to grow upwards not across). Then it was an easy matter of walking through the pergola and picking the beans that were hanging down.

I like the look of wigwams (how I grew mine this year) but find they tend to get all snarled up at the top. I may try some variation of the pergola next year.

Runner beans are my all time fave veg

With a name like Nippy, you should be pinching out

I pinched out and I had a decent crop. This was the first year on the allotment and the soil had not been dug before or improved with manure - I expect to give away far more beans next year than this now I have worked the soil

Re: Runner Beans, (removing the tops )

Well I pinched out the tips this year and the beans are doing great .
Taken three weeks ago, I now have some little beans nearly ready for the pot.

Thank you Eileen shall I send you some
My garden is only small, I wish it was bigger !
I only put the raised beds in a couple of years ago and they have been very productive.

Your beans look better than ours this year Meg. We have some flowers, but no beanlets yet. I like the neat way you grow them in raised beds.
