Did you know ...

... that the collective noun for Ladybirds is "a loveliness"?
How fitting - because they are rather lovely:-

Did you know that these lovely creatures bite?
Not a complaint, just an observation.

Yes - but only if you upset them.

Colorado beetles are much bigger, Donkeyman, and tend to be striped rather than spotted. Not a natural resident in UK but they are occasionally found in potato growing areas.

I was minding my own business, playing handstands with friends on our school field at the age of 10 or so, when a not so "loveliness" ladybird decided to take a nip at my thigh. It stung for hours

I haven't been so enamoured of the blighters since

Re: Did you know ...

Could the ladybird plague of 1976 happen again?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-35603972

The hot summer of 1976 saw swarms of ladybirds infesting towns and cities across the UK, with many people reporting being bitten by them. In the 40 years since there hasn't been a repeat, but could it happen again this summer?

The drought of 1976 was unprecedented in its severity. Reservoirs dried up, as families queued to use standpipes to access drinking water.

But the heat wasn't the only seemingly apocalyptic event to hit Britain that summer. A plague of starving seven-spotted ladybirds besieged villages, towns and cities. The British Entomological and Natural History Society has estimated that 23.65 billion of them were swarming on the southern and eastern coasts of England by late July.

The ladybird population explosion happened at locations nationwide. The pool at Ruislip Lido in Middlesex was covered with dead ladybirds, deterring all but the hardiest swimmers. Ladybirds reportedly started biting humans, particularly by the seaside.
I remember it well. Although I lived near the seaside, my house was a mile or two up an exposed hillside, so the village was spared the invasion, but, in the nearest town, it was Armageddon .....

I think you might mean the Harlequin ladybird. They are an invader and they eat our native ladybirds.

It can be quite difficult to tell which is which. There are some features which differ from our ladybirds, but there is a grey area.

It would be awful to kill our own ladybirds in mistake for the Harlequins.
