Re: Nobody loves a sprout

I love sprouts and we get some smashing ones here. I was always told that sprouts had to have been "frosted" to be good, but it isn't true, we get lovely sprouts here and there isn't any frost, well very rarely.

I can eat them raw, or just just blanched.

Sprout Gratin with Mustard

Ingredients
750g (1½lb) Brussels sprouts, halved
1 x 250g pot crème fraîche
1 tbsp grainy mustard
50ml (2fl oz) semi-skimmed milk
100g (31⁄2oz) Gruyère, grated
4 rashers smoked streaky bacon, chopped

Preheat the oven to gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C. Cook the Brussels sprouts in a large pan of boiling salted water for 3 minutes, drain and refresh in iced water. Lightly butter a large 28cm x 22cm oven-proof dish and add the sprouts.
Fry the bacon pieces in a frying pan over a medium heat until crisp. set aside. Mix together the crème fraîche , mustard and milk and pour over the sprouts. scatter with the gruyere and the bacon. Bake for 15- 20 minutes, until bubbling and golden. Serve immediately.

I saw somewhere that you soak the sprouts in vinegar, and then cover in chocolate. They are good for given to the 'trick and treats' people.

I love sprouts. The best ones I ever tasted were a variety called 'Evesham Giants', they had a lovely taste and weren't strong like some can be.

Re: Nobody loves a sprout

I've loved Brussel Sprouts since I was a toddler.

We have them at any time of year and my dream is to grow my own.

Tried once or twice but the pest problems were unbelievably! stevmk2
