Re: Travel Insurance for Existing Medical Conditions.

Hi Gabi
I do have my Health Card but would prefer to have full medical insurance as the card wouldnt cover existing medical conditions from what I understand.
Thanks for the advice

I think the EHIC covers you for the same as residents of the country you are visiting. It doesn't cover repatriation so I always take out travel insurance too, the travel companies recommend you do. I use a comparison site to see what the different companies can offer.

Yes Val it does, I was just going to say what you've said. Use the compare sites to see who is the most suitable for you, there is lots who cover your condition.
We always have insurance besides our EHIC it makes sense if you have to cancel or lose anything of value.

Re: Travel Insurance for Existing Medical Conditions.

There's a thread just gone up on the Florida forum I use and someone with pre existing conditions has just said she had a great deal with Sainsbury's, might be worth giving them a ring, I'll update as others add unless you tell me to stop, lol.

I can't believe Staysure let you down the way they did.

Re: Travel Insurance for Existing Medical Conditions.

Thank you so much for the info with the health card. I really am surprised that the health card allows my medical condition to be treated at a NHS type hospital in Spain. If this really is the case then I will look further into this and if its okay I will see about booking travel insurance re repatriation etc.

Please, if anyone has anything at all to add to this post I would be so grateful. As last year was the first time I had had to take out medical insurance for a cruise I am a complete novice at knowing what to look out for.

The horrible thought that keeps going through my mind is that I paid all that money for two existing medical conditions last year (copd and treatment for pulmonary embolism), if I had been taken ill, my answer to the health question regarding the oxygen, which I truthfully thought was correct but was in fact wrong (even though I explained it all to the young man who accepted me for the insurance) would in fact have have meant the underwriters would have turned the claim down!!!

Yes, I too am really disappointed with Staysure. I haven't deliberately held a single thing back from them and answered fully and truthfully as best I knew. Even the young customer care lady I telephoned yesterday was surprised that the point system the underwriters have makes it impossible for my copd to be covered! It's crazy, there is everyone including my consultant stating that I am so much better I can be discharged from the Hospital and referred back to my surgery in future and a cylinder of oxygen put into my home for a period of just 8 weeks over 2 years ago in case needed (but never was) has made it impossible for me to be insured for the copd. It doesn't make any sense to me and very unfair.

Re: Travel Insurance for Existing Medical Conditions.

Silbee, thank you so much for the link, there are quite a few helpful names in there that I will certainly look into.
I think I will try to find some reviews of how well people who unfortunately had to claim were treated and if there were any pitfalls or if they were well looked after.

I'd be interested to hear what you decide on SG. I'm always on the look out for good travel insurance.

Re: Travel Insurance for Existing Medical Conditions.

Hi Val, I will certainly let you and the other know whether I get a specialist insurance policy.
Must tell you, I had to laugh at my clumsiness, after filling in countless medical questions on the Boots website for existing medical travel insurance, one of the questions was "have you ever been admitted to ICU in the last twelve months" stupid me, thinking ICU was the same as Accident and Emergency, answered yes !! I realised as soon as I had put the wrong answer in (Never thankfully been in Intensive Care Unit) I looked for the "edit" button to edit it to change my answer or even revert back to the previous page - but hey ho, there was no opportunity to change it without starting the whole quote procedure again. (did not fancy that after already spending ten minutes filling this one in) so just carried on to the end and was declined !! lol.
Oh well, on with the search...........

Re: Travel Insurance for Existing Medical Conditions.

Thanks SG. I would not have known what ICU was, sometimes we need things spelling out for us. By the way we're insured with a company called 'Insure for All', fortunately not needed to make a claim so don't know how good they are if the worst happens.
