We visited Colombo on our world cruise. Weren't impressed. Only place we visited where passengers (not us, fortunately) were scammed, one lady to the tune of almost $500.

Nothing to see that interested us especially, though some friends went to a tea plantation which they said was "okay".

Re: Has anyone ever been to

My son was there for a few days when his ship HMAS ANZAC called in to refuel and for supplies returning from the Gulf. He thought it was fascinating. He hired a cab for a day for a few dollars, the driver took him to a lot of the interesting places. Went to the main cricket club saw all their memorabilia and had a few drinks.

Unfortunately he is at sea at the moment so I can't give you more details but he would have like to have stayed longer and explored the countryside because he really only saw the capital city which he loved.

We enjoyed being in Sri Lanka. We were based at Beruwela. We had gone independently and quite a few days we hired a car and driver, we visited the botanical gardens in Candy, we went into Colombo, but although interesting I didn´t much like it there, Little Holland and other places, including an overnight trip to Yala national park. We wanted to visit Trincomalee, but were not allowed to, enemy territory or something at that time. We had a lovely time there, we did the tea factory and the spice garden, you can get ripped off there very easily if you´re not careful. We liked it there very much indeed.
