Re my upcoming holiday to Dubrovnik ;- I know many of you have been there so I'm asking what should be on my 'must do' list while I'm there ?

Re: Dubrovnik

How lovely for you Al!
I have never been but I know people who have describe the Croatian coast as extremely beautiful. A colleague of mine has property there and absolutely adores the place. I know the paved streets and shops are a must but then I would say that wouldn't I? !!!

Re: Dubrovnik

Oh Dubrovnik! Gorgeous! I only spent one day there on my one and only cruise with my sister, in 1974. It was an absolute joy of apricot coloured stone, beautiful, smiling people, turqoise sea, the best mussels I have ever tasted. Approaching it by sea was like sailing through an old Hollywood film of the Heroes, or Ulysses: impossibly beautiful towering cliffs, technicolour rocks, sea and sky.

That cruise was one of the highlights of my life: 7 days around the Greek islands - £125. Beat that!

Re: Dubrovnik

Last time I was there it was a war zone and the natives were not very friendly.

Even though it has been rebuilt I would now find it very hard to return knowing what went on there Alan.

Re: Dubrovnik

I loved Croatia especially a small village as it was then Seget Donja, I bet it has grown massively since then as it was back in the 70s. Seget was just north of Trogir and Split. We travelled down to Dubrovnik and spent a day wandering around the ancient city. Very gray walls and buildings but quite beautiful and open markets in the squares. Never got to see the new Dubrovnik as we had to get back to our camp site in Seget. Trogir had a brilliant market and lovely waterfront but Split was a typical large city.

Re: Dubrovnik

Been there about 2 years ago got the T shirt. Actually the walled town and harbour are worth the visit. I could put up photos/videos but that would ruin the expectation.

Re: Dubrovnik

No question - you MUST walk the walls! It's pretty hot up there, but the views are beyond glorious. We've done it twice now, and it took us about two hours each time.

Just make sure you buy tickets from the approved boots and not from sellers wandering the streets: they collect used tickets and sell them on to naive tourists (the tickets are scanned and can only be used once). I think it cost us €6 each, two years ago, so not expensive.

And look out for the full sized guillotine in one of the cafe gardens! For customers who complain, perhaps?

Re: Dubrovnik

You will love it! Catch a boat over to Cavtat which is just a little further down the coast. You can also catch a bus if you prefer. It's about 15 mins by road and slightly longer on boat.

We stayed in Cavtat and it is beautiful. Lovely headland to walk round, turquoise sea, not commercialised at all, little icecream shops to sit outside, spotless restaurants and a lovely harbour. I loved it because in the evenings local women used to sit in the shade of the trees and sell crochet items. It's just perfect and relaxing so don't miss it.

Let me know what you think.

Re: Dubrovnik

Alan how long is it before you go to Dubrovnik now?

If you and Sheila are able to manage it, I would definitely recommend the walk around the Ancient City Walls. You can walk the whole 2Km length which would take you about 2 hours approx ..... or there are a few exit routes down from the wall if you get tired. It gets very hot up there so make sure you take a couple of bottles of water with you.

There are three ticket booths leading up to the walls and I would recommend you use the one at the end of the Strada on the left near the Harbour.... the steps are not as steep there as the ones just inside the City walls. The cost is about 90 kunas/approx £9.

You will have some wonderful photo opportunities there, the view is amazing.
