Lock up prisoners just for the weekend: Soft justice fears as Cameron plans to free offenders from Monday to Friday

Many inmates would be allowed out of jail during the week under new plans
The radical scheme, to be revealed by David Cameron, for prisoners near the end of their sentences would see them behind bars only at weekends
It is one of a raft of reforms Mr Cameron will reveal today in a major speech.

Cutting costs would have nothing to do with it I suppose ?

Depends on the nature of the crime. Depends on where they'd be staying (and if the family if any wanted them home). Depends if there's work they could be doing.

Bloody good isn't it? You do the crime ,you do the time. Again i say what the hell is this country coming to? So the poor beaten wife will soon be getting a visit from the beater? I bet there are many worried sick people out there in case this happens.

This System has been used in the USA and other countries for years.

Thinking is that with a minor offence that that person if they are working would not lose their job but would be taught a lesson .

This will not apply for serious crimes like Murder Rape or GBH

With all the get our of jail options, sentencing for a crime..any crime, is a farce today.

It is insulting to those who have been the victim of a crime to do any soft options.

Whatever next...surely cost cutting shouldnt effect prisoners sentences,thank goodness it wont be the prisoners that are in for rape or murder but then how long before some bright spark puts forward proposals for this too !
Once the ball is rolling on some crimes whats to stop the harder crimes being tinkered with?

Denmark has this system and has for years been successful.

usually for white collar crime, non violence with little risk of reoffending.

The convicted person works during the week but gives up his quality time(weekends)to serve his sentence, it saves putting an entire family on state benefits, cuts the costs to the tax payer, it's still a punishment so why not?

We're not talking about muggers, burglars, sex offenders etc being allowed their freedom.
