Do we know it is under veterinary supervision?
Why can't they retire the poor creature? - MONEY.
If it can't chew, is he/she having the right diet to help?

And lastly, as for the selfish 'riders' it must feel like sitting on a razor blade with that backbone!
We are in total agreement on the disgusting way we treat
animals sometimes Mups! But once again imo, that elephant
should have been put down humanely to save its further
suffering, as it looked to be irreversibly compromised to me?
As are all animals eventually!
As regards getting vetinary help in third world countries it is
almost impossible especially for such a large animal and
considering that the people themselves have little or no
health care themselves?
However my sentiments are the same as yours and PDs!!!

Re: Temple elephants

Today, again in Sri Lanka, a whole family of elephants have been killed by a local population.
Poisoned , all but one tiny baby dead. He was found trying to suckle his mother, and it's hoped that he hasn't been poisoned from any of her milk.
The elephant wild corridors are being built on and humans are in fear of elephant conflict, so they kill them all !

Sri Lanka ? Not the most favourable place for holidays in my opinion.

What a horrible death for them all, Puddles.

I do hope that poor baby survives.

Poisoning should be made illegal internationally, it does'nt
just kill the target animal!!

PLUS, it would be a drawn out and painful death.
I also imagine it would be in the mother's milk that baby was trying to suckle.

Re: Temple elephants

Puddle Duck, I am like-minded and thank you for the information. We have seen bears likewise chained and beaten into doing tricks in Russia, and notified both the Russian embassy and tourism departments that we had no interest in visiting a nation that tolerated such abuses.

When on vacation, I never ride, pursue, or in any way participate any excursions that involve animals. Too often there is a dark story lurking behind the scenes.

I have no intention of every visiting China for their complete disdain for the lives of animals. Nothing they have to offer in terms of geography, architecture, art, or history is worth the way they treat dogs...and really anything that moves.

People can skirt the issue and attempt to justify in any way they like, but chaining an elephant is a crime that dam*s all of humanity.

Sri Lanka is just another island. There are loads of better ones out there.
