It wouldn't have mattered a single jot what was proposed. The opposition parties are duty bound to criticize it, and the EU have a vested interest not to allow anything work since it could precipitate other countries making a departure too.Ultimately, there are pros and cons to being a member of the EU. The trouble arises when the perceived cons are greater than the perceived pros. If the cons had been resolved to mutual satisfaction, then non of this debacle would ever have happened.

But it does indicate a failure by the EU to realise the true depth of feeling within these shores. Their intransigence is partly to blame for this whole sorry state of affairs.

I suspect that the EU will have a relatively short lifespan. Whether the UK departure marks the beginning of the end is up for debate and history will tell.
