Regional Prejudices

Do you think they're based on fact and do you think that you are like the stereotypical image of your region?

I often see Brummies (my birth heritage) depicted on tv as slow-witted (I can be) but they always seem to talk with a Black Country accent instead of a Brummie one and, as a group of people, Brummies are neither more dim from birth than anywhere else or speak with a Black Country accent and yet the myth pervades!

What stereotypes have you had made about your or where you come/came from?

I think its a snobbish attitude, you dont talk like us, so noses down on them. I love most accents and the variety it gives. Adds to the characters. Most are generalised in humour, the Irish, scottish - so the way to deal with it is just to laugh at yerself... gets us through most things. I think to stereotype is laughable too .... I do it tho' with the posh, sometimes they get me goat, other times I just laugh at the way they talk.. If they laugh at the way I talk, thats fine, as long as theres no nastiness.....

Re: Regional Prejudices

when I came over here beer was 88c a pint(?) and the first person I served in my first job here in a pub asked me how much it was and when I said eighty eight ta! he thought I was calling him an idiot! I love hearing different English accents and most Aussies like mine altho' there's really no difference generally in the way Aussies talk no matter which state they're from but Kiwis talk with a very distinctive accent,

Kiwis, to me, always sound like a cross between Aussie and South African.
Unfortunately I think we are losing a lot of accents in the UK. I was born in Slough and as a child could distinguish whether (local) people came from Slough itself, Staines, Maidenhead, Reading or further afield. Today all these slightly different accents have all merged into a generic "London" accent.
I imagine something similar is starting to happen in other areas too.

No disrespect, but I must admit the Birmingham accent is one of my least favourite.

We were never permitted to use the accent common to my island home, although I would put it on to wind my mother up, which it did very successfully!

Our children were brought up to speak good English and it has stood them in good stead. I am at present trying to iron out some Northernisms in my grandchildrens accents!

Coming from Surrey when we go on holiday people always say how posh we sound. Can't hear that myself certainly don't mean to be LOL

Re: Regional Prejudices

I have led a sheltered life & on the rare occasions I have travelled north of the M4, everyone talked funny.
