Oil Drilling in Englands National Parks

Has anyone heard about this ?

A few years ago, fossil fuel companies were banned from fracking in Britain’s national parks.

Now they’re back.

A handful of companies are about to start an oil rush in southeastern England, using diluted acid to dissolve the rocks and release more oil.

This ‘acid drilling’ technique lets them get around restrictions on fracking, and drill for oil in some of our country’s most special places.

Oil companies have bought up drilling licenses across the south east of England - and Greenpeace investigators found that these licenses cover nearly 180,000 acres of protected land. National parks, areas of outstanding natural beauty, and sites of special scientific interest are now at risk from oil drilling.

Huge areas of South Downs, Surrey Hills and Isle of White.

Re: Oil Drilling in Englands National Parks

This really gets my dander up.

The reason that we willingly pay taxes for public lands is that the public wants these areas protected from development, encroachments, mining, fracking, oil drilling, etc.

Here in the US, the protection and acquisition of public lands recieves the highest bipartisan support from the voting public.

...and still the blasted politicians ignore their constituents and give them away for mining, forestry, and drilling.

My place took the direct hit of the BP Transocean oil spill. If you don't believe it changes the land for decades to have an oil spill - just ask.

Get the oil somewhere else. If it's to the point that the only places left are public lands, we have already run dry.

Hi

Surfermom.

We have a big divide here in the UK, if Oil had been found in the Industrial Areas not a word would have been said.

We are a tiny Island.

It is about time the rich Southerners took their share.

Drilling and fracking need regulation but we also need the oil and gas which could transform our econonmy in the medium term, and give a breathing space to be able to develop sustainable energy production of other types for the future.

What we cannot afford is to be completely reliant on foreign countries for our energy. It's a dangerous world out there and we desperately need to be independent of energy .

Hi

Spot on Barry.

If they found oil in Prees, Stoke, Birmingham, Huddersfield, there would not be a single moan.

It is about time the Southerners accepted the reality of life.

I quite agree, when he Tory wretch Lord Howell suggested thar Fracking should take place in the Desolate North East, he was forced to apologise.

I agree. We face the same problems here. Fracking, done right, can be the lesser of necessary evils.

_________

The question is whether or not there are options to protect your public lands.

If you pay taxes to protect your public lands, what happens to the money that comes from the leases on those lands? One suggestion here is that it be used to buy additional park land as a mitigating factor.

Truly wondering here: Is there really so much oil/gas specifically in those national lands that it would truly trasnform your economy and make you energy dependent?

In the end, I certainly understand your situation as a small island nation, just throwing out some food for thought and some warnings from someone who has seen fracking sites, wastewater and spills, and the nightmarish impacts of two oil spills.

Fracking wasterwater: Make sure all sites are in flood-free zones. We have had multple problems with floods causing wastewater entering streams and the public water supply.

What retention ponds look like:

This is what a fracking site looks like. This one is not far from my parents, on private land:

This is what spilled wastewater looks like:
