Greenhouse repair

I have an old greenhouse which - all glass, except the first panels from the base.........which look like asbestos. They are cracking and have obviously let in mice etc. I'm not sure what will happen when they get worse........the glass panes above them may slip..... but I'd obviously like to get it repaired before then. What can I use to replace the asbestos panels?

Re: Greenhouse repair

Wood paneling ? wood from pallets is relatively free and makes a decent fence or in this case greenhouse base ? bricks more expensive but last almost forever ?

Re: Greenhouse repair

I’ve got a 4 season red cedar greenhouse I built last year and the bottom 3 feet is red cedar wood. It’s mould / mildew resistant and helps keep insects away. Wood is a good substitute.

Yes! Pictures really help greatly when people are asking for structural help with something.

Re: Greenhouse repair

Never managed to post a photo on the forum, though I managed to post one in my profile!!
There's a photo of one exactly the same about six posts down on this:
https://forum.gardenersworld.com/dis...-of-greenhouse

On a different forum, a post suggested replacing the asbestos (or fabric concrete??) with plastic........so I'll make enquiries about that.

Re: Greenhouse repair

After viewing the pics I’d say use the fabric concrete . Wood will deteriorate eventually since it’s partially underground. Fabric concrete will last much longer, won’t deteriorate and will be much cleaner.

Re: Greenhouse repair

What about using plastic cladding like they put on porches, I don't know what it's called or polycarbonate sheets?
You have to get a special person to dispose of the asbestos though, when I wanted to replace my outhouse roof I had to get quotes from a licensed specialist asbestos remover, I decided not to bother to replace it.

Re: Greenhouse repair

I'm not yet sure if the current base is asbestos or fabric concrete - either way, it's rotten and either of those can be disposed of. To replace.......I think it has to be plastic. There's a plastics company not far from me, so I'll make enquiries next year!
If it IS asbestos - it's harmless unless I saw it up or eat it!! Disposal can usually be made at council tips if it's double wrapped........ will enquire about that too.

Re: Greenhouse repair

I'd probably use polycarbonate panels.

Easy to cut to size, won't rot, waterproof, won't break if accidentally kicked.

I don't know how the existing panels are fitted, but perhaps their replacement panels could be held in place by those wire clips that many greenhouses use to holding the glass panes in place.

If the existing panels are actually asbestos, please take great care not to breathe in any escaping particles. You could start by damping them down.
Better still, get professional advice as to their actual composition and, if necessary, their removal.
