Re: What did you want to be when you grew up.....

I started off wanting to be a vet, but wasn't allowed to take more than one science subject for O'levels.
I would have loved to go to Art college or Bristol Old Vic to do acting but my Dad had to give up work and Mum was ill with depression so I took all that was offered by career advisor at school, dispensing apprenticeship at Boots.
It was that or hairdressing, which didn't pay as much.

Re: What did you want to be when you grew up.....

My first aspirations at 15 years' of age for a career, and I recall for well before that, was to be a veterinary person. Poor examination results ruled that out though.

When I did leave school at that age I had a choice of two careers to follow. One was a trainee camera technician in ATV studios (now ITV). That was ruled out as union membership was necessary but not possible, only 16-year-olds could join the union.

The other choice was a six-year apprenticeship in the printing trade. Completion of my apprenticeship at 21 was followed by working my way round that trade gaining experience. Some years' later I found work in the advertising industry, a small and specialised section of the printing trade. That ended after being made redundant for the fourth time, I just could not get regular work in the recession of the late 1980s early 1990s.

Self-employment, still in graphic design/printing/editing saw me through until retirement three years' ago. In all I had worked for 55 years in the printing trade with just a short while unemployed. Definitely interesting, creative work and a good career given how it turned out.

I always wanted to work in an office, started a job one week after finishing school, in a large well known company. I worked myself up to the Accounts office and left just before the computerised system came in. I enjoyed every minute of it and left when my twins were born.

A vet or a farmer, sadly I didn't have the brains for the first or the money for the second so settled for working with dogs.

I wanted to work with horses & did, but there is not enough money in it to live on & I wanted my own horse so I started doing shop work. I enjoyed meeting people & selling. Still do actually.

Re: What did you want to be when you grew up.....

Watching Slade on TOTP made me want to be a guitarist in a band. Along with some friends, we did form a band and did reasonably well performing in pubs and a couple of festivals. we also recorded a few songs of our own but unfortunately, we all met girls and we split up never to return.

After my ice cream man period, I wanted to be George Harrison, then it was David Bailey, then I thought I'd best get a proper job.

Re: What did you want to be when you grew up.....

I always wanted to be......

A lumberjack!

Leaping from tree to tree! As they float down the mighty rivers of British Columbia! With my best girl by my side!
The Larch!
The Pine!
The Giant Redwood tree!
The Sequoia!
The Little Whopping Rule Tree!
We'd sing! Sing! Sing!

In the end I settled for being a sparky - got a few electric shocks in my childhood which prompted me to find out more. Did (and still am in part) that job for 48 years.
