USA, Germany, good thing?.

Not just Germany. According to the news this morning, seems the American National Security Agency have been spying on 30+ national leaders telephone conversations. The Americans profess to be the country for freedom, - oh yeah??? - so why spy on so called friends and trading partners???

Back in the bad old days of the 'Cold War' - The Americans were forever looking for 'Reds under the bed' and the Russians were always portrayed as the big bad enemy - seems they were perhaps looking in the wrong direction and should have concentrated on their own Government agencies.

Isn't it rather naive to think that they weren't? And don't all other countries do the same?
Really it's just a matter of "Thou shalt not get found out"...

Oddly I always thought this was what spying was all about and that we were all doing it. So not sure why anyone was surprised. The key is of course don't get caught !

I was surprised, thought it was about good relations these days.
Think its awful personally, and its a sure way to start aggravation and other countries following suit .... Dont get it - no real friendships or allies then .....

You can still be allies while just keeping a weather eye on the people you are dealing with, when decisions are made in Europe it tends to be Germany and France doing the deciding we need to know if they are making best decisions for them or the rest of Europe. It would be odd people who didn't have loyalty to their own country above the rest of Europe.

Oh I don't know they probably have to know what's going on too so they can make decisions wisely. We have a global economy these days anything the USA does impacts around the world, same if China does something so we all need to be best informed about each other.

Everyone spys on everyone. No.. I'm not surprised.. I would like to find the "bugs" Germany has on the USA.. OR Britain... or France. and Why wouldn't the USA want to know what their friends are doing. For instance.. What is Germany going to do about Greece.. or other EU finacial matters ahead of time so wise decisions can be made. What surprises me is that anyone is surprised.
