I remember when my Nan used to come and stay we would go and meet her off the big steam train that pulled into the station.
All trains were steam trains then.
I also remember the little bottles of milk and a straw we were given at primary school to have at break time.

I used to listen to pirate radio, Radio Caroline and Radio London, I took my radio with me everywhere.

My friend had a portable battery operated record player, it played singles and was about the size of a vanity case.

Mobile phones that were the size of a brick!

Dansette record players! Remember them? Not portable I think, but like a big box with a spindle in the middle so you could put on a stack of records. It used to let them down with a huge Thwack! - you wonder they didn't break.

I remember accumulators, they were glass batteries about half the size of a small car battery filled with acid, lots of rural homes had no mains power, they used the accumulators to power their radios, a local bicycle shop in the town charge sixpence to re-charge them.

They used paraffin lamps for light in the evenings, some homes had gas but no electricity, I remember the old gas lamps with the ceramic mantles, when the gas was lit it made the mantles burn brightly.

All this went on only 55 - 60 years ago so it aint ancient history but things stick in your memory don't they.

I can remember the small milk bottles at school ....... I used to dread it when it was my turn to be milk monitor as I hated milk and the smell of it alone used to make me feel quite queasy

Oh....... and remember the last that your dad used to repair your shoes on instead of taking them to the cobbler?! I used to think it was great when he nailed 'dinkies' onto my heels!
