The place where I first worked (for three weeks!) provided a nuclear sterilisation resource for specialist suppliers of must be sterile products, it was one of the very few in the UK at the time. It scared the bejasus out of me!
Yeah, common ones are high temperature (autoclave) or as you say Gamma Irradiation, it's perfectly safe normally.
I remember a funny story about a microwave however, that wasn't safe. A mate of mine installed radio comms for the police, it worked great for a while, then started to play up, lots of interference, but oddly enough only at lunchtime and in the early evenings. They eventually traced the problem to the local chippy, in order to save time the owner had removed the door on the microwave and bypassed the safety switch, "it's much quicker to use now" he said as he proudly showed them he could now warm up his pies without the hassle of opening and closing the door.

And at the same time showering his staff and customers with microwaves.

Not a good practice it is true but the escaping non ionising radiation is still subject to the inverse square law.

Waste of time in my opinion - I doubt it saved any time because the microwaves would have just escaped through the open door rather than being concentrated within in the Faraday cage. I suspect that it probably took a lot longer (and I mean a lot) to heat the pie than the time saved by not having to open and close the door.

It would have also killed any WiFi in the area because microwave ovens tend to operate on about the same frequency. (2.4Mhz from memory)
