Puppy Sales Increase

I heard on the news today that the Kennel Club are reporting a huge increase of people searching for, and purchasing puppies since this wretched virus.

They think because so many people are now home all day it would be a good way to relieve boredom, get exercise, and keep the kids happy!

What infuriates me is, what happens to these pups when the owners return to work??

I actually saw it recommended somewhere that if you were thinking of getting a puppy lockdown would be a good time as it wouldn’t be alone in the house .

My thoughts exactly Mups, I'll be keeping an eye out for dumped dogs on my daily walks. I expect the Shelters are going to be gearing up for an influx too. Once those pups hit around ten months they will become holy terrors if they've not been getting obedience training.

Thing is Roxy, Many shelters have closed their doors because they are overflowing.
They are not getting any prospective new owners come and look round, and they have also been struggling to get the animal food deliveries too.
Gawd knows what will happen.

How people can think a pup is a good idea to amuse themselves for a few weeks, then return to work and the poor mite is left sitting looking at a brick wall all day is beyond me.

Re: Puppy Sales Increase

Here we go again, one of my neighbours got a dog, didn't bother training it, then when it got older they began having issues, knowing I was an ex dog handler they asked me if I'd train it for them, I refused, but said I'd help them train it, they weren't interested, it's not almost always in the garden, then they got a Chihuahua, that grew up with no training, so the don't bother with that now.
People shouldn't get a dog on a whim, I won't have foreign holidays as I have a dog and won't put it in kennels. Having a dog is as big a responsibility as having a child, most people wouldn't just have a kid without thinking about it, but they'll get a dog. I've decided now that my current German shepherd will probably be my last, she's 9 and will probably live until she's about 12, at that age I'll be 58, so to get another after that would potentially mean someone else having to look after it if something happened to me in my 60,s. Dogs are fun, I''ve had some great times, but they're also one hell of a responsibility.

Re: Puppy Sales Increase

Sparky, GSD's were my passion for many years - have a peek in my photo's.

If your present gal lives till 12, and even then you will still be in your 50's, presuming you are still healthy I would not say that is too old to take on another.

Even if you didn't want one straight from the nest, there are many who would still appreciate your knowledge and warmth I am sure.

Look here:

P.S. When you say you were a dog handler/trainer, may I enquire for whom? Was it Police/Security dogs, or in an Obedience training club type thing?

Sorry if I appear nosey.

In some cases, it will be a form of... ‘A Puppy Isn’t Just For Christmas’.

Re: Puppy Sales Increase

I have mixed feelings about this. No, negative feelings.
The rescue centre where we got Max is closed to visitors.
Now is not the right time to get a new dog if you can't go out to walk it.

Re: Puppy Sales Increase

Another thing that bothers me is that because of the old social distancing malarkey, puppies will not be socialised properly.
