Re: Man dies after being attacked by cows in Yorkshire Dales
A sad incident indeed.
Some years back, cows used to roam on some Army land we have around here. I think they still do on parts of it. The land was more open for public use than it is now. My brother and I rode our bikes on it in our childhood and as born-again bike-riders in our 50s, 60s and 70s.
We knew cattle could be dangerous but some people would walk through the middle of a herd. As older townies, we were always a bit wary of them would always
steer clear. An even wider berth was given if there were calves around.
My brother went on a 'lookers' course so he could go and check the condition of the cows occasionally. He looked out for illnesses, injuries etc.
One rule learned was not to pass between a cow and a calf, so we never did. Another was about dogs. If the cattle took exception to a dog, it can be dangerous to try and save it. Let the dog go if necessary. That must be hard for the dog's owner but maybe essential to avoid death or injury.
