There now appears to be a time and a place for Free speech .

It's choosing the right time and the right place that now seems to be the problem

Re: The shackling of free speech

I am all for free speech within reason, even if it offends someone.
After all, I am being bombarded every day with stuff I find deeply offensive on the TV every day, and sometimes by the people I meet.

However, I agree with Malcolm there that on a forum such as this, everybody just cannot be given free reign to be abusive and offend another member.

And anyway, hardly anyone on this forum would wish to do that, no matter what.

Re: The shackling of free speech

Without this freedom of speech things can never change for the better .

There would still be apartheid in South Africa
Black people would still sit at the back of the bus in America .

In today's world without freedom of speech would the world be aware of the dangers of allowing to much respect for religion ?

Charlie Hebdo caertainly brought that to the fore .

It awakened France and the world to the dangers of fanatical Islam .
Fanatics of whatever creed or faith cannot be allowed through intimidation to shackle free speech.

No...all it has done has made France a very frightened country. You do not see Ebdo with anything like the headliners they once used

Re: The shackling of free speech

I am very much in favour of free speech but appreciate sometimes it has to be monitored for the protection of others .

I just hope no one who is in favour of unlimited free speech has ever reported anyone on here for saying something they don't like.
That would be hypocritical ...
