EU plant registration

The European Union has decided to meddle in things as trivial as garden plants and flowers. They have the bright idea to demand that all plant varieties be listed in an official EU 'registry'.

Nothing more than a ploy to create government jobs and to generate money via registration fees and fines. And maybe a foot in the door of controlling what plants and seeds people are able to buy at their local garden center or retailer. "Charges are higher for food seeds and plants and can cost up to £1,000" to register a variety

Why charge more for registering food seeds and plants than for flowers?

Re: EU plant registration

I don't like this idea at all but we do need some sort of control of plants, we have people (and always have I know) bringing anything into the country with no thought to what devastation to the countries flora. Some countries have really strict rules (Australia being one) that keep their country safe. We need something similar here.

Bringing plants into the country, has nothing whatsoever to do with this EU money making scheme Julie.
And what about the RHS? Their plant 'bible' is good enough for me.

Re: EU plant registration

I think the point is, that we don't need this money making scheme.
The money won't go to Britain and the plant growers - many will go out of business because they won't be able to afford to register all the different varieties - up to 70,000 and could be £500 each.
Commercially non viable for plant breeders. Meddling EU...and what are they going to spend the money on?

Re: EU plant registration

I ordered some hedging plants online from Buckinghamshire Nurseries in the UK - three flowering, scented varieties (one for spring, one for summer and one for autumn) and one set was refused by the Isle of Man!

Goodness Karen, very strict border control in the Isle of Man!

Did they give a reason?

No - the Nursery told me that the Isle of Man refused it but not why (and I can't remember the name of it now). It didn't even occur to me that they'd check - I wonder how that worked?
