Do you know any other way Alan? I never use any chemicals on the grass incase of harming the dogs.

Phostrogen is supposed to be harmless.
I wrote to the makers years ago, because of the animals (tortoises) and was assured that it was OK to use.
Doesn't kill weeds though

Guess you could use salt

Sorry Mups I don't. What about using "Feed and Weed" and watering it in right away ? Just an idea.

Re: Moss

I just read a small article that said, if you let the weed and feed dry, it should be ok. Grazing animals should be kept off the grass for 7 days.
This might be useful:-

Thanks Rachel, but I'm not surprised it didn't kill the weeds, its a very good feed for plants! Surprised it didn't make your tortoises grow too.

Thanks for that Jan, I had a look. Its not really feasible to keep the dogs from the garden for 7 days plus a mowing though. They're obviously not 'grazing' animals but today for example, one of them must have been feeling a bit 'off' and was pulling at the grass as they do when they want to be sick, so I wouldn't want them doing that if it had just been treated. Guess I'll play safe and leave it as it is, but thanks for trying.

..my neighbour has a great lawn and does this every year. It improves the drainage. She uses peat with the sand but many people don't use peat these days.

I can't be bothered to do it because I like moss

Re: Moss

We scarify twice a year which pulls most of the moss and thatch out of the grass, and we spike and topdress every second autumn. The only chemical we use on the grass is Verdone as a spot weedkiller as and when any dare to show themselves...
