..my neighbour has a great lawn and does this every year. It improves the drainage. She uses peat with the sand but many people don't use peat these days.

Ah, thankyou Meg. I've done bits of the grass before like that but it got a bit tiresome. I think I'd better make more of an effort this year - thanks again.
