Voltarol Yes or No?

Has anyone any experience of Voltarol? My wife has Osteoarthritis in one knee which is extremely painful yet apparently not painful enough to qualify for an operation. I'm thinking Voltarol must be worth a try but is it?

Thanks for your reply Art. Maybe I'll try it on my knee first to see if I get any odd side effects.

Re: Voltarol Yes or No?

You don't say if your wife has tried any other form of pain killer?

When I first visited my surgery re hip pain I was sent for an x-ray which revealed "moderate arthritis" and at that point I was prescribed cocodamol. However lately, having read another thread on here, I stopped taking them and tried Voltarol instead.

I have since seen my GP again and am now awaiting an appt with a Consultant re a hip replacement. I advised my GP about finding Voltarol more effective and she is quite happy about my using it.

Re: Voltarol Yes or No?

I have used Volterol on my aches and pains many times and found it good.

Never had any bad effects though. If you are taking any other medication though, it is wise to check with the pharmacist if it’s ok for you to take. I don’t think you can use it if you are already taking diclofenac tablets e.g aspirin or ibuprofen.

Re: Voltarol Yes or No?

Thank you all for your helpful replies. My wife has been taking Paracetamol, two tablets four times a day as prescribed by the Doc for around two years. That alone worries me. So many tablets for such a long time with no end in sight and the pain is so much worse lately. The Doctor, in his infinite wisdom, says "Walk through the pain" Great advice I thought.

Re: Voltarol Yes or No?

great product I too also use it on my lower back . Takes about half an hour to work but lasts for me all day. Always have a tube in the cupboard for when I need it. No side effect either.

Of couse it all really depends on what is causing the pain as to how effective it is

Thanks for the positive reply Realspeed. I think I will try some on myself first. If all is ok then hopefully It might ease her pain a little.

Just be aware there are two strengths - I use the 2.32% to be most effective.

Marge has similar pains in hips and knees and has taken Voltarol among other things.

As far as we know, Voltarol can work well for muscle pain, but not so sure about joint pain like OA.

Marge has tried applications of heat pads and cold pads, sometimes alternating the two. She takes Naproxin and Ibuprofen, although the former is prescription only.
You could see your GP about Naproxin. Worth a try.
