Ammonia super fuel??

News just in on TV today! A professor on BBC news floated the
opinion that ships could be fuellsd by ammonia, which apparently
is abundant? Why he suggessts ships l have no idea as l have a
problem hearing the soundtrack?
But surely if marine diesels can use ammonia then automobile
can also?
Just a thought!

Hi

A very good find Donkeyman.

Yes it can be used in Marine diesels.

They use a very heavy oil, more like tar, not ban option for smaller, lighter engines such as those in cars.

The second problem is this.

China take things very long term.

They now own or control 80% of the rare earth metals required to make the Catalyst.

SF, you are more knowledgeable about this than I. I am not sure what the catalysts are, I remember barium compounds being among them. Aren't they found elsewhere?

Ammonia is a great option; no biohazards byproducts. I think research on ammonia mostly stopped when natural fuel prices fell.

Donkeyman, a good share.

Re: Ammonia super fuel??

That's interesting, especially as it seems possible that this may be the answer to current pollution problems by using it in vehicles. Link below to the BBC News item the OP may have got this interesting news item from:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-51548361

Seems the idea has been around a while, I found information from 2014 relating to cars using hydrogen derived from ammonia. Another link below gives more information:

Re: Ammonia super fuel??

Does this mean we'll have huge lakes of piss to extract the ammonia from?

At one time Hydrogen Peroxide was going to be the wonder fuel.
