True Pugsy. I was amazed to learn that the channel was actually proposed in Victorian times. Amazing history on that.

Ah,but at that time, the tunnel was with regard to two things-agriculture and drainage. The closest railway didn't [at the time] even actually pass through Omis. Strange, but true. So-a canal would've been really popular at the time.

Re: Leisurely Scribbles (part 5)

Ah today was funny - my car has 'died' so I had just about managed to drive it chuff chuff chuff hiccough hiccough to my FIL place who is a mechanic and left it there for a week. then he told me the bad news - it still wouldn't go. So - today I went down to see the car and we dropped around to the local mechanic - talked car talk to him who said 'nah it's effin dead'

So we then decided to tow it back to my place for pre-funeral arrangements - my fil attempts to tie up towing ropes of not thick enough diameter [yes he is a bit thick ]and had no coupling links -sorry ladies you may not understand all of this. he then attempts to pull breaking the rope of course several times and removing a 2 inch piece of skin off of his leg!

getting really funny now! - as he attempted to tow his car was going west and mine east - hang on he said I am going to get some proper towing brackets. A crowd had gathered at this point offering advice that went unheeded

Well whilst I am waiting I am strumming my fingers and decided to try to start the car - just for fun!! and bingo it started - spluttering and coughing but it was chugging - I thought feck this I am gonna make a run for it. So of I took with the existing chain under the car dragging along the tarmac. As I chugged along at 20-30 km/hr people were waving and pointing to under the car - I just waved back - smiled and said thank you. and so I chugged - there was one major obstacle the main hway that I had to cross to arrive safely home. I approached it with trepidation but phew no traffic in sight so shot across at 20-30 kmp and home safe with now the wife following me and the fil who had caught up. when I had finally parked they arrived.

I don't believe you have just done that he said - well I said I am a scouser and when we decide to do something we follow through. let me look under the bonnet he said - so we lifted it and to my amazement there were hoses etc that had not been re-connected - I would never had done it if I'd known - but he said 'I still don't know how you managed to do that with all these hoses and pipes not connected. I have now been awarded the order of the main roads - bush mechanic - [scouser] award for astonishing driving under extremely hostile conditions.

Oh I do hope pugsie bear likes this tale wot with him into drivin and all ??
